An unconventional coffee shop with that eastern European twist we’ve all been looking for, nestled at the entrance of a commie block. This spot is more than just a java joint, it's an absolute haven for caffeine addicts, touted for its AeroPress mastery. Mike (co-owner) won 2 Romanian AeroPress Championships and got to the Semi-finals of the World AeroPress Champs in 2019 - smecher. But it's not just about the brews, Rob and Mike will welcome you with all the warmth you would wish for. If you're a fan of specialty coffee, this place might just be your newest neighborhood haunt!

Boiler Coffee Shop has a new neighbor! A brand new "Bacania" and "sandwich shop" with an Italian twist, called Fresco Artigianale. Their sandwiches are legit, they have amazing Italian gelato, as well as other artisanal stuff you may want to bring with you back home.

Coffee at Boiler + Sandwich and ice cream at Fresco? I don't know what you think, but in my opinion, this sounds like the perfect combo for a great time in Eastern Bucharest.

Boiler rebirth looks like a true success. First of all, it is nice to see a coffee shop opening in an area where specialty coffee was missing. Second, it is nice to see that the place is getting a lot of customers very quickly. Third, I really like the design of the place, with the large front-window, allowing you to see what is happening in the coffee shop while being drinking your coffee outside. 


They have several coffees on the menu, prepared by some of the most experienced baristas in the city, as well as a range of other tasty products for your friends who are not -yet- into coffee.

Boiler Milk & Coffee is the perfect spot for the ones going on a walk around Vatra Luminoasa or Parcul National.

A family (the Furdui family) business, done the right way! Bacania Lu' Furdui promotes some of the greatest Romanian food and drinks items out there! From local zacuscas, jam, vodkas and craft beers, to butchery elements, your grocery shopping experience will definitely be a great one!

I am happy to see that one of my favorite guilty pleasures from my students years in France made it to Romania. The "French" tacos! 

The french tacos has nothing to do with the mexican version. Here is it all about cheese, french fries, meat and your favorite sauce. It is all packed into this burritos bread, which makes it look like a brick. It is heavy, it is unhealthy, but it tastes so good when you feel like not caring about your diet. 

FYI, the urban legends says that the french tacos was born in Vaulx-en-Velin, in Lyon's suburb, and quickly invaded other French cities, and other countries as well. While the "kebab" or "grec" was extremely popular in French cities 15 years ago, the Tacos is quickly becoming THE most popular street food option, especially for the Gen Z. 

Of course, before visiting Tacos Factory in Bucharest, I was a bit suspicious about the quality of the tacos, because I could easily name my favorites and be super judgmental about Tacos places I don't like much. But honestly, our local tacos spot really makes a great job!

Bacania Janos Bacsi is a "bacania secuiasca", meaning from the Szekelys, the Hungarian ethnic group living in Harghita, Covasna and Mures regions. 

Most of the products you will find at the "bacania" come from the region. You'll find craft beer, cheese, meat and other delicacies, selected carefully to ensure high quality standards and transparency.

Before you ask - and as it is shown on the picture - : Yes, they speak Romanian, and yes, you will find romanian products too.

One of the most notorious places when it comes to burgers. Yes, it's Modelier!

But don't believe Modelier is only about burgers. They also excel in the art of preparing waffles and cocktails.

You can enjoy these delicious products in a nice house from the "Interbelic" period, or at their colorful terrace.

Look at these happy faces. Some of Bucharest greatest coffee people out there, opening a coffee shop and roastery near Piata Iancului. Quiet street, wonderful interior design, and ex-cel-lent coffee. While being a neighborhood coffee shop, against all odds NOMONYM is quickly bringing people from all over the city. NOMONYM is definitely the kind of place you feel like going again and again. I'm starting to wish it could be located straight next to my home. 
Quick heads up: this place has the potential to become your next favorite spot for coffee in town.

Surrounded by Sicilian-style tiles, you will eat in Sicilian-style painted plates typical Sicilian dishes. Couldn't be more Sicilian, right? Well, actually it could. Even the staff is Sicilian.

The menu is huge because you can choose whatever you want to have in your pasta, pizza, arancini or risotto. 

They have signature dishes that are worth trying. And of course all the beverages, including crafted Sicilian Colas, Lemonades and more.

At Zece La Rece, we don't promote only food and drinks places which we like, we also mention places adding a lot of added-value to this city and to this country. EFdeN stands for f(n). n being equal to nature.

So, what is EFdeN ? It is a project started by a group of students willing to make Romania a more sustainable country. How do they do it? Well, it is not that simple, but basically they've built a house in 2014, which is completely sustainable and which won many competitions. 

The house is amazing, it is the prototype of the house everything should have. Being an NGO, they don't turn their prototype into a business, but they spend time developing bigger, and even more sustainable houses and devices, aiming to make us live better. 

Why is that? Well, buildings are one of the biggest pollutants both in the construction phase and especially during usage. This argument was enough to convince these 47 students from various universities from Bucharest to collaborate together and dedicate their energy for this project.

So, one advice I can give you is to contact them to pay a visit, it is absolutely worth it. After your visit, you might consider saving a bit of money to buy the house of your dreams.

Sometimes you walk in without expectations and just get caught.

Soro Lume did that to me, what an experience.

First, the menu is short, but provides a lot of diversity, from vegan to fish through meat. You will only find signature dishes and I'm definitely planning to test it all.

Second, if you have the chance to eat, facing the open kitchen outside, witnessing dishes being prepared with wood fire, from grill to oven. Raw elements perfectly cooked separately and then gathered by the chef in ceramic plates. Simple but very well executed. Top notch detail : the bread is baked in the oven on demand

Third, the wine selection is as great as the music playlist. Expect lautari, and other balkanic vibes.

Let me be vocal about it, Soro Lume is definitely one of my best food experience in Bucharest.

When it comes to finding authentic Italian cuisine in town, look no further than Ristorante Da Giulio. Tucked away in a not-so-fancy area, this charming restaurant has been serving up mama-pizza favorites for many years. And let me tell you, their homemade pasta is a game-changer. As a self-proclaimed pasta connoisseur, I can confidently say that Da Giulio knows how to make me very happy. The carbonara with mushrooms is a must-try, bursting with genuine flavors. If you're looking for a night out with exceptional Italian cuisine, Da Giulio is the place to be.

As a French, I am not supposed to truly enjoy a place called Waterloo, because it is one of former French Emperor Napoleon's biggest defeat at a battle... But, well, the place is really awesome (and I am not very patriotic...)

For the ones who are not into history, and don't know much about Waterloo, no worries! I don't plan to do any history lesson now. Please just note the Waterloo battle took place in what is now called Belgium. Now guess what? Waterloo taverne is a Belgian restaurant.

What to expect? A selection of belgian beer (bottled or draught), as well as delicious food. I personally recommend their mussels (with Roquefort cheese is even better) or the carbonade. To be mentioned as well, the waiter is extremely friendly, and it deserves to be highlighted!

Coftale is one of the oldest places offering specialty coffee in the city, if not the oldest. The cafe is located in an old house with traditional romanian chemneys. Besides having good coffee, Coftale also offers food on the menu. We love the fact that is it one of the only places where we really feel like home, while having a tasty cup of caffeine.

In Bucharest since 2014, Switch.eat belongs to this type of places locals have on their list when they look for a burger. They have obviously various beef burger alternatives, but also pulled pork, lamb and vegan burgers. Not willing to have a burger? They've got you covered with their quesadillas, chili con carne and more.

Their large terrace under the sun is the perfect spot for a pleasant moment with a bunch of friends.

You've probably heard several times that Bucharest is a coffee city, right?
Well, MABO is a perfect example illustrating that it's true. The roastery opened in late 2019, founded by Bogdan Georgescu, who became World Coffee Roasting Vice-Champion in 2019. 

Bogdan is the second Bucharest-based roaster who ends in the podium at the World Coffee Roasting Championship in the last 5 years. 

You can only imagine, MABO is a wise choice if you look to get a bag of coffee for home. The place is also a coffee shop. Florin will most probably be behind the bar, ready to serve you with great espressos and milk-based coffee drinks.

It's also one of the first coffee shops to open in that area of the city. Just keep in mind that the place is closed during weekends.

We love bookstores, and we also love the ones who open a place bringing added value to the community. Dispozitiv Books is a mix of both.

We've met so many (read "too many") people in Eastern Europe talking about how bad is their country, how poor it is, how boring it is. But as foreigners living in Romania, and who've been travelling a lot in the region, we've seen a lot of nice things that we couldn't necessarily share on a piece of paper. Why does that matter?

Simply because Dispozitiv Books is an unique bookstore focusing on content promoting Eastern European countries, and especially Romania. Most of the books and magazines share insights about specific topics you'd never think about, and which will make you realize that the place where you live is not that bad after all. Give it a try, have a look at the books, we're sure you'll find one to bring home and which will make you see your country with different eyes.

We remember seeing articles about Taco Bell to open in Romania, and that made us so sad to see how many people were happy about it, especially as they already have El Torito offering the best Mexican food in Eastern Europe. Just to tell you that if you want some real Mexican cuisine, don't go to Mega Mall or Promenada, but Iancu Capitanu, near Foisorul de Foc. Just make sure you book a table first, the place is often full.

Despite the huge expansion in Bucharest's specialty coffee scene, certain parts of town still lack their own coffee shop. Enter 20 Grams, providing great coffee outside the city centre.

Brought to you by the same people behind Hoptimist, besides roasting their own beans, they have designed a fantastic coffee-drinking space. Minimalist and full of natural light, it's a great hangout space in a lovely area. As well as their tasty, well-balanced coffee, try some of their delicious cookies and cakes - especially the salted caramel cozonac (if you get there fast enough!).

There's an italian word for a place where you can taste and buy a decent variety of wines: Enoteca.

How many different bottles would you consider being "decent" then?

Ginoteca brings the concept of an Enoteca around Gin, and with a choice of... near hundred different gins. Keep in mind that each single gin has its own cocktail recipe. Decent enough, right?

Wood and Ivy decorated, hosting fresh herbs and fruits, the place offers a nice room upstairs and a real nice and cozy terrace outside.

Of course you can have a soft drink, a coffee, or other spirits. But hey, we have a pure player here, don't miss that chance!



Ginoteca

If you're looking for a unique dining experience in Bucharest, look no further than Tribes. This pan-African restaurant offers a variety of tasty dishes that will transport your taste buds to the heart of Africa.

The staff at Tribes is not only friendly but also attentive and eager to make your visit as enjoyable as possible. One standout dish that comes highly recommended is the stew with chicken pipote & hearts, banana, peppers, and super hot chili. It's packed with flavor and sure to satisfy any cravings you may have for African cuisine. Plantains is also a great option!

Spoiler alert! This is not your typical place!

I moved to Romania 5 years ago. Since then, finding delicious local cheese felt like a perpetual challenging journey, not being seduced by the regular Cascaval and Telemea -yet-. Of course, I found good cheese on the way, in some remote villages, but it was hard to maintain that relationship with the farmer and enjoy these lovely cheese when being in Bucharest. I went to several "Piata" and "Bacania", looked for all the cheese stands, tried most of the aged cheese available, but never found that top quality I was able to find in the villages.

However, very recently, some friends told me to go to the Local Farmer's Market on Bd Unirii and go to the cheese stand, as they have great products. And what a surprise! I can tell for sure that the best Romanian cheese I've ever had comes from this place, and going there became part of my weekly routine.

Very straight-to-the point, Gedo makes 'simple' taste amazing. If you're into Middle-Eastern and Sudanese food, you'll get great quality for little money. No need to ask for anything fancy, just order some rice, spit-roasted lamb, veal or chicken, some hummus, why not Ayran, and finally enjoy the moment. Gedo is one of those places where prices are kept ultra-low while plates are ultra-full. You know what they say, tell your friends...

A little coffee shop, located at the intersection between Strada Traian, Bd Dacia and Calea Mosilor, serving coffee from Dropshot. This area of Bucharest definitely needs to see more specialty coffee shops. Glad they opened.

RUA Espresso Bar

Step into the world of arzu, a culinary experience on its own. The moment you enter this bright and modern space, you'll be captivated by what reminds me of Japanese design minimalism, with aluminum accents and birch - I think - furnishings creating an atmosphere of tranquility.

But it's obviously not just the aesthetics that make arzu special. The attention to detail in every dish is outstanding. With a menu that changes with the seasons, you can expect a fusion of Oriental, Mediterranean, and local flavors. From the aromatic spices to the delicate taste combinations, each bite is a journey to celebrate.

If you have a sweet tooth, make sure to try their fruit tarts. Bursting with vibrant flavors, they are the perfect ending to your meal. Customers rave about their desserts available. 

Overall, arzu is a true labor of love. From the great specialty coffee roasted by Origo prepared on a Victoria Arduino Eagle One espresso machine, to the impeccably crafted dishes, it's evident that this place is driven by passion. So whether you're looking for a quick bite or a leisurely meal, arzu is a destination that should not be missed.

PS: there is also a section of products to bring home such as mustards, salts, teas, coffees, gins and more.

Kick up your taste buds with a visit to Mathara Bath kade, a canteen in Bucharest that excellently brings the spice-infused flavors of Sri Lanka right to your table. Positioned conveniently in Obor market, this place hosts a small terrace for an intimate, rustic dining experience. Known for its fiery and flavorful cuisine, Mathara Bath kade is quite the hit among Asian food enthusiasts.

Their menu might be a little puzzling for first timers as you self-serve some items like curry, but don't let this deter you. The experience is worth the adventure! Don't skip out on the desserts, which are pretty amazing good!

With the promise of kottus (a distinctive Sri Lankan dish) and a variety of other dishes waiting to tantalize your senses, Mathara Bath kade is the place to return to for a uniquely spicy escapade.

Let's start with an hypothesis: everything that can be heard, tasted or seen, is always better when done with passion and expertise. If this affirmation is valid for music or painting, the people from Bacania Rod truly understood it also applies to food.
While supermarkets also provide Zacusca, Cascaval or Salata de Vinete, beside the name of the product printed on the packaging, the comparaison stops here; and no need to mention the ingredients list.
Your sense of sight will not betray you, even if this might seem like an oasis in the middle of the desert, no mirage here: it tastes as good as it looks.

Boogie Bar is all about serving your favorite beverage at a fair price, providing good music which fits with the time of the day you get there, a friendly staff, a lovely terrace for sunny days, and something that reminds me of most bars in Germany, and which can make you stay there for hours: a table football (it's called foosball in Romanian, right?) .

You got it, Boogie is the kind of place that will make you spend some great laughing / playing / dancing / drinking time with a bunch of friends.

Our Ukrainian and Bulgarian neighbors have this concept since many years now, and it is great to see Artizan Beer doing the same job in Romania.

You can now buy draught craft beer to your home, and by liter. Indeed, they fill bottles of 1L from the draught and all you do is to pay for the quantity you ordered. This is also much cheaper than buying 33cl bottles of beer. While we advice to consume alcohol responsibly, just make sure that once you open the bottle, it should be drank relatively quickly if you want your beer to remain tasty, as you can't really store it for a week, once you opened the bottle. 

I think this is the perfect concept for house parties. You can throw big home events with quality beer at a competitive price.

If you still prefer to drink your beer in 33cl bottles, please note that they also have fridges with a nice selection of craft beer.

Artizan Beer - Bere Artizanală Românească

In the midst of Bucharest's lively Obor market, you'll discover "OBOR AMOR", a place with radiating unique energy and overflowing with local vibes. This little spot is ideal for taking a pause after a bustling market stroll. Start your morning fresh with their irresistible mini-cocktails or keep the weekend vibes high with some quality daytime drinking.

Amidst the unbeatable location (on the upper terrace of the old hall), the charm of this place skyrockets when you bring snacks from the market to accompany your drinks. Why not get some mici from Terasa Obor and pair them with a refreshing beer and mini Negroni? It's an experience that'll truly light up your day.

OBOR AMOR

Terasa Obor is simply the mici lovers ultimate place! Just ask 10 people randomly what is the best place to eat mici in the city, and I am sure that Terasa Obor will be the big winner (the one on "Team La Cocosatu" will hate me for that). Located straight in the middle of the Obor market, you will probably find people queuing starting early in the morning for some "mici cu bere". Don't be afraid by the queue, these guys are the most efficient BBQ makers in the whole country. Don't forget to get some mustard and some bread for the ultimate experience, and... obviously a beer. No, not a craft one, not even a bit.
Worth mentioning: This place is definitely not vegan.

Terasa Obor

Street food at its best. Pizza Maestro is, in my opinion, the local way of doing italian fast food pizzas, with fresh ingredients and a real neapolitan pizza oven. So, if you end up walking on Mosilor in the evening, or look for a warm snack to eat while in the area, you have your new spot. Pofta buna !

There are those shops you enter knowing exactly what you want to buy. There are those you visit simply with excitement, to look for something delightful. 

Sertar Magic is the latter kind - a vintage and second-hand menagerie, filled to the ceiling with antique furniture, homewares, watches, clocks, vinyls, mirrors, lamps, trinkets, games, signs, vases, statuettes, artworks, books……. This list is almost endless.

Started around two and a half years ago by Belgian native, Michael, the shop itself is just as attractive as the items he has carefully selected to sell. Unlike many other second-hand shops, everything sold in this "Magic Drawer" works and is ready to use. With new items arriving regularly, and occasional social events to showcase fresh stock, it’s a joyful place and worth returning to whenever you’re in the area.

Trust me, you’ll want to live in this house. From the inviting entrance to the laid-back garden terrace, from the basement brick bar to the open kitchen floor and nordic-style attic, Simbio screams coziness on all levels. Since relocating from the old city centre to the more quiet Armenian district, Simbio has become a favorite among urbanites for late brunches and lazy breakfasts. Come for the eggs (benedict, norwegian, florentine), come back for the burgers (finally a place where they don’t overcook the meat), come again for the OMG pancakes. Weekday tip: check out their lunch menu which changes daily. Weekend tip: make a reservation, as always.

If you’re nostalgic about the late 80s and the 90s, the brand new Replace location on Armeneasca might be your perfect spot to sneak for some cool garments while enjoying some great songs from the boom bap times. And great music comes with delicious coffee, you won’t be disappointed. They provide excellent specialty coffee from different roasters! Sunbathing with my morning coffee on the spot, while listening to Notorious B.I.G felt like I was in Brooklyn for a moment.

If you're craving some delicious Georgian cuisine in Bucharest, look no further than Taverna Georgia. This place is a dream come true for all those who have longed for authentic Georgian flavors in Romania.

The menu at Taverna Georgia offers a variety of mouthwatering dishes such as Khinkali and Adjarian Kachapuri. And let's not forget about the excellent selection of Georgian wines or lemonades that perfectly complement your meal.

While I would suggest removing the TVs from the terraces to enhance the overall ambiance, there's no denying that this place excels when it comes to quality food and prompt service.

Overall, if you're looking for great-tasting food accompanied by friendly staff and a welcoming vibe, be sure to check out Taverna Georgia. It's truly an exciting addition to Bucharest's culinary scene!

Not sure if you heard about it, but Naples is known worldwide for being THE capital of pizzas in Italy (read "in the world"). Mamizza is a new concept bringing Neapolitan pizzas (and cuisine) to Bucharest, helped with the traditional brick pizza oven, visible from the main room, and even from outside. The cozy atmosphere makes you feel home, and a big thumb up for the old neapolitan grandma graffiti on the wall. I can't forget to talk about the menu, which is divided between traditional pizzas with a selection of re-invented ones, a great way to open your appetite. Another plus, while Naples pizzerias have decided to continue to offer dark roasted coffee to their citizens, Mamizza made the decision to bring specialty coffee to its menu.

What a nice feeling to see all these shelves full of Italian mozzarella buffala, parmigiano, prosciutto and other italian products. Sara opened its third location in town. It is a store and not a restaurant this time, but the selection of products is as great as in the other locations. 

Cooking good italian cuisine at home has never been so easy.

When it comes to finding the best sandwich in town, look no further than Grain Trip Bakery. This cozy bakery not only specializes in delicious and healthy sandwiches, but also offers a wide range of pastries and specialty coffee. Trust me, their croissants are a must-try!

But let's talk about the sandwiches. While they may be on the higher price range, they are worth every penny. Grain Trip Bakery isn't afraid to get experimental with their sandwich creations, giving you a unique and flavorful experience. And if you're looking for more affordable options, their croissants are equally tasty.

Speaking of drinks, don't miss out on trying their remarkable socată, an elderflower fermented homemade drink. It's a refreshing and delightful treat. 

The counter is a real invitation to try specialties from various countries. My French roots pushed me to chose a "canele de Bordeaux" and a revisited "Gateau Basque" with lavender and peach. I also bought a "Pain Rustique" for home, but you can also get to discover specialties from South Africa, Lebanon, Italy, Germany, and whatever other country you have in mind. Ask them, and they'll definitely surprise you !

This esteemed vinyl store has a unique presence in the city and has been a vital part of Bucharest's electronic music community since its establishment in 2013. Misbits is a haven for DJs and collectors alike, offering a vast selection of rare and hard-to-find vinyl records. Real Foods is all about real food. Simple, right? All the products you can find will be carefully selected, in order for you to ensure you only get "real products" which are both tasty and healthy. Working mainly with Romanian producers (for what can be produced in Romania of course), they give you the opportunity to do your groceries in their stores, but also to order online. Real Foods is a great concept for the people who don't want to lose time trying to find great products in typical grocery stores, but it is also for the ones who want to ensure they don't eat any harmful products for their health. Basically, Real Foods filters out what is good for you. You save time, and they ensure quality.

But that's not all! They also prepare "ready-to-eat" menus that you can enjoy for your lunch breaks.

Papila Kitchen is a place carefully composed by skilful hands; as careful as if they were selecting the meats on a charcuterie board. Keeping tabs on taste, aspect and cohesion, Maria Burachu and Gabriel Herdean have created a kitchen resembling an anecdote you tell your dearest friends over a glass of wine. Every flavour is considered: sweet tableware, savoury furniture, sour textiles, umami lights and not a hint of bitterness. With the support of their most talented friends, they have succeed in putting together an international kitchen - basically a living room of taste where you go out with your dearest people, family and friends.

The menu, developed, tested and implemented by Chef Vasile Nicolae, is inspired by different parts of the world and, more importantly, is built on seasonal dishes. The soup section includes a thai soup to warm you up from the inside out, as well as a cream tomato soup with the perfect texture. For sandwich lovers, there’s beef with goulash sauce and roasted bell pepper. But they also have one with home grown chicken, camembert and garlic puree! What to choose?! 

Papila is also very-vegan-friendly, since their all-vegetable sandwich is fantastic. The drinks are well-selected: coffee and specialty teas, craft beer and various liquid mixes with fruits and aromatic herbs.

Everything Maria and Gabriel did at Papila, they did with a sole goal in mind: expressing the best versions of themselves. Bring your taste buddies here and you won’t regret it.

Tucked away in the vibrant Timpuri Noi neighborhood lies Hidden - The Social Space, a hidden gem that caters to the craft beer connoisseur in all of us. As you step into this cozy bar, you'll be greeted by a friendly owner and the warm welcome of a resident cat, instantly making you feel at home.

Dolci Coni is one of the places you can trust when it turns to ice cream. Prepared with natural ingredients, following the seasons, you'll be able to find your favorite flavours. I personally go for the lavender biscuit/pistacchio option. I've put Dolci Coni in the sweet stuff category, but you'll really enjoy the fact that their ice creams are actually not too sweet nor heavy.

The Vasile Lascar location is the second shop of Dolci Coni in town. You'll particularly enjoy the sunbath starting from the time you exit the place with an ice cream in your hand.

Trei Betivi Bar is open until the last customer leaves. More than just a bar, the place has a strong craft beer menu, live music on a regular basis, and Sunday movie nights.

Live music is great way to promote local musicians, and their movie nights make us watch movies we'd not have thought about (#noBlockbusterhere), which is a big value add in my opinion.

The place is relatively small, but offers a terrace with a couple of seats.

Pastrami lovers have their new favorite place in town! In house Pastrami and more offers a range of pastrami sandwiches and hot dogs, that can be accompanied with french fries, craft beer and more.

Plant lover? You'll enjoy spending some time at FROG for your lunch break or for some cocktails with friends in the evening. Small and cozy, you'll be surrounded by greenery, constellations and friendly staff.

Want some food? They have a selection of homemade cakes which will keep you busy in front of the counter for a while, as it is honestly difficult to choose what to order. They all look so good. I went for the Tarte Tatin which was delicious, but I think I'll have to go back soon, to try another cake. It really reminded me of these Scandinavian brunch places, where cakes are king!

Savory dishes are also on the menu, from vegetarian lasagnes, salads, soups, quiches, and various platters to share. It is nice to see a mixture of italian, french and moroccan dishes on the menu.

Finally, for the late bees, their cocktails list is a must-try.

FROG

From its minimal blue/yellow logo and name, I was expecting Sardin to be a fish restaurant with a Swedish touch. How wrong was I. This is (okay, challenge me) probably the best Italian food I’ve had in Bucharest. Designed by Corvin Cristian, the mastermind architect behind Paine și Vin, Moony, Boema and many more of Bucharest’s finest spots, Sardin is an invitation to revel in authentic and fresh mediterranean cooking at its best.
The chef, Radu, who spent 18 years in Italy working with several starred chefs, is a freak for carefully-picked, seasonal ingredients. As we sometimes say in French, you can order with your eyes closed, you’ll be in for a treat. But you might as well keep them open, as Sardin is a feat for all senses. Highly recommended: the beef tartar, the salata de caracatița or any of the fresh pasta. Add to this an impressive wine list with over 100 Italian and Romanian picks to choose from, a sunbathed terrace and impeccable service -- and you get a killer fancy dining spot to enjoy on a date.

Guido is primarily a roastery, making it a right place to enjoy the smell of freshly roasted beans. Mostly serving coffee bags for home baristas, you can still go for a visit and order your favourite drink. If you want to feel the vibes of a coffee shop and drink the coffee from Guido, go to Fellow One, on Calea Victoriei.

More and more fast-goods are popping in town. Pickles is definitely to put on the list, offering a daily changing shortlist of items on the menu, including handmade pickles-based options prepared in front of your eyes. I recommend the Cornbread-chorizo-egg combo for a spicy brunch if available. You can eat your today’s special on the large and sunny bench/table. Convinced ? Give a try to one of the nice homemade pickles pots to bring home! Remember : don’t mess with the Pickles!

Let me tell you at at least three reasons why Manasia Hub is so special. 
First: Manasia used to be a Police station. Seems though that the Ministry of Internal Affairs got a budget cut and had to sell half of the building. As a result the building is now divided in two: A bar on the left, the police station on the right. As Cut-Killers' vynils would scream in the movie "La Haine": Assassin de la police!
Ok moving on: second fun fact, upstairs you can play ping-pong from the right hand, drink a beer from the left one, and escape on the dance floor when the pressure of the tie-break gets too high. Talking about the dance floor, it is actually one of those places where I would recommend the music. Homie feel from the invited DJs, songs you won't hear anywhere else... If tonight's party fits you, relax, enjoy and turn on automatic pilot. 
The third good reason will touch your heart in it's most summer-ish memories: the terrace is made to chill with your friends. It feels a bit like a neighborhood party, where you would like to get the grill out and share a meal. No need to bring the grill though, as they usually invite their friends' foodtruck "Bucateria". Oh and let me tell you, those guys will rock your taste buds.
Finally, fourth (I said four right?): good to know but Manasia is not mainly a bar. It is actually more like a cultural hub. Artists stay here as a residence, and participate by bartending among other things to its community.

Buoni e bravi is one of those places that, someday, open at the corner of your street. It might be a small street, a square or an avenue. In our story it is a square. A square named Piata Rosetti. For a few days you pass in front wondering what is happening behind those tall windows... But always on the rush, it's only at night that the idea of giving it a try comes to your mind. And once again it's too late, they already closed. Damn those small teams trying to preserve the quality of their product by opening only a small chunk of the day! When will we synchronize you and me?
 
But then something strange starts happening. The entrance door refuses to close, as you need to leave space for the line inside. Not only, as a few days later, some more people start popping up, and the line extends to the sidewalk. And it keeps coming, never stops. Your colleagues from work start saying "who wants pizza from Buoni e bravi?" even if the office is 30mn away from the enchanted slices... There must be something to this place. And here it is, from 18:00 they extended to 20:00 and finally you can taste the answer to your question. The classic story of a pizza-place that needed less than a year to become a reference in downtown Bucharest. A tip on their strategy: the quality and generosity of the ingredients. Sometimes it doesn't take much more than this.

Buoni e bravi

T-Zero (tea-zee-roh / tO / To / t-zee raw, well as you wish) is one of the first cafes offering specialty coffee in town, and most certainly the tinest. You basically have two options: or you take it to go / or you manage to have a sit in one of the two or three chairs available and you'll have the pleasure to talk to the team being working a meter away from you. But no worries, they are very cool guys, you will enjoy buying your cup of coffee from there.

An outdoor art gallery, where pieces of art are exhibited only if you are somewhere in the sky. No need to take the plane or an helicopter tho, all you need is to get on top of the Turnul de Arta, from where you can admire the pieces, painted on the roof of several buildings belonging to an industrial complex in Pantelimon. However, Make a Point is not only a nice panorama of Pantelimon and its paintings, the association also organizes screenings and temporary events, aiming to "bring culture closer to the people, geographically", as they say.

Consignatia 7's new location set foot on Hristo Botev Boulevard. Being one of the cutest second-hand around with a good curation on what they have to offer, a visit at Consignatia 7 fits perfectly in a lazy and sunny week-end afternoon, strolling around the streets of Armeneasca and the Jewish district.

You should by all means check out Kane, the latest venture from the team behind M60, a beautifully designed bistro on the more fancy side. The good: they have chosen to work only with small, hand-picked Romanian producers, and focus on seasonal products. The great: well… the food. Creative, tasty, and focused (a single-page menu, finally!), everything here is a fresh new take on tradition. The unique: the staff at Kane know the story behind every dish, and such attention to detail is a blessing. The bonus: homemade bread & butter. Fun fact: the lush urban design revolves around Greenery, Pantone's color of the year 2017.

Ivy is one of the greatest places to have a coffee if you are in Universitate area. Located on Carol I boulevard, Ivy serves coffee from Origo but also tasty snacks to make your lunch break more pleasing. On top of serving great coffee and food, Ivy also made lots of efforts on design. The balance between wooden furnitures and grey walls is very pleasant and will make you stay longer if you decide to stay in.

As you might expect from the coffee shop above Bucharest's official SCA barista school, First Coffee serves tremendous coffee. Let's start with a fun fact. You know how us French think we're so good at cooking simple but refined, and oh-so-delicate 'cuisine'. We've got this big baguette of an ego leading us to brag and boast about the balance of the tastes we lay on those pretty porcelain plates. Well one day I got to try Beautyfood. And it is beauty good. Obviously they have the classic burgers and all that, but since you asked me, my sweet spot is the salmon. This bad boy is chilling out there, having a ball with some salad leaves + rice (cooked juuuust right). I told you, it's simple, but it's fresh and delicious. If you'd like to go further in the fresh category, a good choice is always the 'menu du jour', limited edition of food-kisses and other butterflies in your belly. 
One last fun-fact since you really want to know this: when Mother comes to visit, she always eats here. And she knows about good food.

Beautyfood

Romanian food is not necessarily about Mici, Sarmale and Zacusca, and Zexe makes sure people who enjoy a dinner at their restaurant get to know about other specific dishes. Having a focus on food from the interbelic period, they put on the menu some recipes which have somehow disappeared from today's romanian cuisine. As they say : "Pronounce in a loud voice, holding your right hand on your heart, the password: ZEXE! " when you arrive there. It will make you become one of those enthusiastic people willing and determined to put the Romanian gastronomy on the map of European culinary values.

Statia Rombeer brings draught craft beer to your home!

All you have to do is to ask for the quantity of beer from the draught you want and they fill it in 1L bottles.

Price-wise, it costs much less than taking 33cl bottles. However, even if we should advise you to drink responsibly, you should still try to make sure the bottle gets drank relatively quickly after you open it, if you want to keep the quality of the beer tasty, as you cannot really store it for a long time after it got open. 

This is really a great way to get quality beer for large home parties, without damaging your wallet too much.

If you want to stick to craft beer in 33cl bottles (which I completely understand), please note that they have a large selection of bottled craft beer in the fridge. We are glad to see the craft beer movement being spread in residential neighborhoods.

Hop Hooligans, one of Romania's most notorious craft beer brewery, is now establishing its own chapel for craft beer hooligans. The mausoleum of their famous Crowd Control can be found there, where you can enjoy most of your after-works, evenings and weekends. Usually offering 15+ different draught craft beers, you can also try experimental and foreign beers in cans and bottles, that you can pick up directly from the fridges. Glad to see Romanian craft beer brewers having their dedicated taproom in town!

Located few steps away from Unirii, Emozia will come to you as a refuge in a small cobblestone alley, where coffee enthusiasts will find great coffee, as well as a selection of amazing coffee related books to read on site. Established in a former cotton factory, shared with places like Gastrobar Deschis and TOT, Nod makerspace is not your usual co-working space.
While many entrepreneurs focus on software or services, some other took a more 'physical' path. Nod makerspace gathers around itself architects, designers and freelancers in an environment prone to craft work. They recently welcomed a new neighbor: 'Mater' is a library of materials unique in Romania. It comes as a perfect addition for the makers of the space looking to properly 'feel' any material they might need in their creation process. 
Nod also hosts a very strong and developed community spirit. A community that recently elected democratically their new community manager. And even better, a community open to the outside. From a personal experience I've got to experience the warm welcome they give to anyone in need of their expertise.
While we often see Timpuri Noi as an up-and-coming creative and business-oriented neighborhood, it might also be the next-step for Bucharest's collaborative communities with the likes of places like Nod or Impact Hub.

How to tell if a French restaurant is really a good and true French restaurant. Simple answer: you have to see french nationals dining there. Ici et Là passes that crucial test, with the honors from the jury, as each time I could find at least one table singing the sweet melody of French to my... well french ears. Ici et La exists since many years, but since they relocated on Strada Domnita Ruxandra, I have to admit that the experience is even better than what it used to be. Located in a beautifully renovated house, surrounded by a welcoming a terrace, I suggest you try their tartare beef if you are into raw meat. No worries, if it is not your cup of tea, there are other options which will satisfy your palate for sure.
And not to forget a must for any french restaurant: a great wine list.
And a bonus:  some craft beer from One Beer Later, brewed by another French man in Buzau.

Restaurant Ici Et La

While few unsensitive people could see Bucharest as a mess, I definitely prefer to talk about the city as a patchwork. You’ve probably heard about the city tour called « Bucharest, the old little Paris, the new little Berlin », and If I still didn’t find any Currywurst in town (let me know if you hear about a good place), among blocks and Brutalist architecture, Club Guesthouse could be one of the reason why Bucharest is more and more compared with the german capital.
As a reflex, You’ve probably checked on Resident Advisor, where to spend your nights here and there are 100 percent of chances that Guesthouse catched your attention. Very good. 
While some clubs are closed during the summer or prefer to diversify their lines up (which is very good too!), Guesthouse, besides being open all year long, is fully dedicated to techno, house and underground electronic music. The Guys know their stuff and I've never been disappointed by any parties I’ve been to, au contraire. Note that’s it’s probably less complicated to be admitted there than at Berghain, just that they don’t have any dark room (if the idea might have interested you). Is your booty asking your brain for a 48h shaking? Then you found the spot.

If you’re looking to escape the cluttered Centrul Vechi and get some perspective, head south to Timpuri Noi, a neighbourhood that’s poised to become one of the new major creative areas of the city within the next years. Set atop Industria Bumbacului, a revamped industrial compound home to the amazing NOD Makerspace, Deschis has one of the most enjoyable - and biggest - rooftops in Bucharest, overlooking the Dâmbovita river.

A kid-friendly spot with its own sandbox, Deschis sometimes hosts outdoor screenings, and can become pretty crowded (with creative folks) when the weather gets nice. The terrace is a killer spot for drinks, but if you come for the burgers, make sure you book beforehand. Like often in Bucharest, the space fills up in a matter of minutes. Finding the place can be a bit tricky as there’s no sign, but just climb up the stairs at 160 Splaiul Unirii and head for the skies. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of the best sunset views on a hot summer day.

If you're a coffee lover searching for the perfect brew, look no further than Perfect Simplu - Timpuri Noi! This excellent coffee shop, opened by Andrei Clenciu, is a haven for caffeine enthusiasts. With Andrei's impressive credentials as the winner of coffee competitions such as the Romanian Comandante Cup '18 and Slovak Aeropress Championship '22, you can expect nothing but expertly crafted beverages.

Apart from the exceptional coffee, Perfect Simplu also boasts a nice little terrace where you can enjoy your brew in the sunshine. It's the perfect spot for a leisurely morning or afternoon coffee break. This coffee shop is a fantastic addition to the vibrant hub initiated by the neighboring Deschis Gastrobar, NOD Makerspace and Guesthouse. So whether you're a local or an expat looking for a great cup of coffee in Bucharest, make sure to pay a visit to one of the three Perfect Simplu locations.

You might have a heard about Londophone close to Cismigiu... Well you've found yourself a Londohome now. A good spot if you're a bit curious about Bucharest's music scene. Also a good occasion to chill on the terrace, under the cozy green leaves, and most likely with either a craft beer (Three Happy Brewers, Sikaru, Hop Hooligans...) or why not, an original craft cider from Clarks.

Most of us were missing Gradina Eden and its iconic vibes on the back of Palatul Stirbei. Most of us will love Sera Eden and its amazing greenhouse installed on the back of Casa Bratienilor. A lot of space, plants and trees, delicious cocktails, and some nice food available. Sera Eden is already a symbol of Bucharest post-pandemic rebirth.

Bookstore? Bar with a view? Or both maybe? Carturesti Carusel is the flagship store of Carturesti in the whole country. Loved by the locals, and fascinating for the ones visiting Bucharest for the first time, the building itself is a memorable experience for the ones passing by. There is also an amazing selection of books and gifts who can be offered to your loved ones. A mandatory step for the ones looking to buy Christmas or Birthday presents.

A concept store in the old town, who thought it would be possible? The Urbanist makes it real and will offer you great cocktails, craft beer, as well as specialty coffee from the local roaster Bob Coffee Lab. Relaxing during the afternoon, The Urbanist switch its music in the evening and becomes more of a great bar offering everything you need for a good pre-party session.

A neighborhood coffee shop, located between Timpuri Noi and Cantemir boulevard, serving coffee from Dropshot coffee roasters. One thing is sure, we like to see coffee shops covering new areas of Bucharest. 

There is something else I really like about this place: you'll get a small caricature drawn on a cup of coffee by Adrian-Vasile Trestian, a deaf-mute artist, while you wait for your coffee to be prepared by the barista. You can find out about the caricatures on Humans Coffee Instagram page, but I suggest you let yourself being surprised by going there and see how the result will look like.

Experience a taste of Scandinavia with a visit to GYST, the coffee shop in downtown Bucharest that brings Nordic vibes to Romania. With its stylish retro Danish decor and fusion spirit, this place is definitely worth checking out. 

Treat yourself to their signature Scandi-Romanian dishes that combine both cuisines and techniques. And don't forget about the coffee - it's sourced from Coffee Collective in Copenhagen!

The spacious and comfortable setting makes it an ideal spot to hide from the sun in summer afternoons, especially if you're lucky enough to snag one of their cozy sofas.

While there are plenty of vegetarian-friendly options on offer, make sure not to miss their renowned fried chicken - available only during evening hours.

Created by architect Laura Paraschiv, Circa 1703-3071 is the perfect place for someone who feels like travelling to another planet.

LVEV, for La Vita E Velo, and not for Lviv, the Ukrainian city. LVEV is a shop located in the city center, selling hip bicycle brands such as Brompton, Brooks, Pashley and Electra. But that's not all, LVEV is also a coffee shop, using beans from Madison prepared on a La Marzocco and also offering a brunch menu. The large vitrines makes it a great spot for the ones looking for a cozy atmosphere while enjoying the light coming from outside. Dolci Coni is one of the places you can trust when it turns to ice cream. Prepared with natural ingredients, following the seasons, you'll be able to find your favorite flavours. I personally go for the lavender biscuit/pistacchio option. I've put Dolci Coni in the sweet stuff category, but you'll really enjoy the fact that their ice creams are actually not too sweet nor heavy.

Aubergine is a perfect example of the type of restaurant we all would like to see more in Centrul Vechi. You know, that restaurant where no one stands outside to ask you if you'd like to eat something in 5 languages until they figure out you're not a tourist.

Here, you'll find some of the typical lebanese/israeli dishes, as well as other moroccan influenced meals, an amazing selection of fish and meat. I particularly love the importance of vegetables in each plates they serve and the way it is cooked.

You might have passed front of the entrance without  noticing it. Indeed, the place seems as discret as the quantity and the variety of their offer is large, and I guess I can declare without taking any risks that at other times, Bacchus's adorers would have chosen Vino as their sanctuary. Hundreds and hundreds of bottles of wine are waiting for you, it's as much flavours as    colourfull wine dresses   which are offered to your look and your sense of taste.
The feeling that catched me  when I've been there is that  owners combined  the sophistication and the requirement, the choice of a bottle can represent, with the simplicity   but deeply efficient   following equation: a glass +   delicatessen and cheese plate  + friends = Perfection. No need  for me to have a PhD in mathematics to discover the result.
Here the conviviality is the key and it seems that in a biggest place, Vino's experience must have been definitly something else. A large and unique table at the first floor,  it seems that everything there has been done  in order to remind to all us that we are social animals, and so much more socials around wine and food to share together.

Rick Berkelmans (Hedof) masterpiece in the yard of the Ion Mincu University is one of the things most of people visiting Bucharest don't know about. Some other paintings can be found around. How to get there? During weekdays when the students are there, or eventually during the weekend if you kindly ask the security, hoping that they're having a good day!

Attached to the French Institute building in Bucharest, Elvire Popesco is a very popular cinema that usually premieres Romanian movies and hosts film festivals such as NexT, but also reunites the French community (hot guys alert -- i told them not to let me write this article) in Bucharest through conferences etc. Named after a very popular actress that was too pretty to live in Romania and wanted more followers so she went to Paris, this cinema features a very interesting movie selection (also late evening screenings for night owls).
This is a nice place for dates, of course, and nobody is going to spoil your romantic evening by loudly chewing popcorn behind you, because that's forbidden here.

Modul is the new-born kid of Carturesti, which opened at the University of Architecture and Urbanism Ion Mincu. More than a bookshop, Modul is also a cultural hub and an urban garden, which aims to welcome book launches, exhibitions, conferences, and people willing to do any type of creativity oriented activities, for work or for fun. Plescavița Sârbească is all about cevapi and... plescavita!

For those who are not familiar, cevapi is the Serbian equivalent of mici. Juicy and flavorful, these perfectly grilled meat sausages are served on fresh "somun"/"lepinja" bread, topped with ajvar and raw onions. It's a taste explosion that will leave you craving for more.
